My Journey
After a long career as a lawyer in northern and central Kentucky, I discovered Tai Chi and Qigong as a way to bring more balance, clarity, and calm to my life. What began as a simple curiosity quickly became a passion. The practice helped me unwind from years of high pressure work, improve my mobility, and reconnect with my breath in a way I had never experienced before.
I have been physically active most of my life, ever since I was a chubby high school kid who joined the track team just to lose weight. Running became my foundation, and I went on to letter in both track and cross country in high school and my senior year of college.
In my early 20s, I stepped into my first Yoga class and a few years later I began lifting weights. Those practices have stayed with me for the past 50+ years, a steady thread of strength and movement training woven through my life.
By 2007, however, my left hip began giving me trouble. I saw several orthopedic surgeons and did everything I could to avoid surgery. Eventually in 2014, I had my first hip replacement.
During my recovery, I bought two Tai Chi and Qigong videos. One by Scott Cole and another by David-Dorian Ross. At first, my intention was simple: to improve my balance. But as I continued practicing, I discovered so much more. My energy increased, my mobility improved, and I found a new level of calm that supported me through the stress of being a criminal defense attorney.
In 2018, I completed by first instructor training with Scott Cole on Zoom. Since then, I have completed four additional instructor trainings in Tai Chi and Qigong and am qualified to teach both standing and seated forms.
In 2019, I had my right hip replaced and once again my Tai Chi and Qigong practice played a central role in my rehabilitation process. Through Covid I worked from home and practiced daily. Between DVDs, YouTube Videos, and Zoom classes with Scott Cole and David-Dorian Ross, I now have over 1000 hours of practice.
I have taught small group classes, employee retreats, work place lunch sessions, and weekly classes at Wildfire Yoga Studio in Lexington, Kentucky. I recently had the privilege of teaching an adult daycare group for persons with cognitive differences - an experience that reminded me just how accessible and healing this practice can be for anyone.
Now, at 73 years of age, I can attest to how much better I feel because of Tai Chi and Qigong. These practices have carried me through injury, stress, depression, aging, and daily life with more vitality, balance and peace. Today I offer classes that can be custom tailored to the ability of all participants regardless of age or ability. Session lengths range from 30-50 minutes. Whether you’re seeking mobility, relaxation, strength, or simply a calmer way to move through your day, I am here to guide you.
